Tippecanoe School Corporation

National Junior Honor Society

Membership Selection Process

The National Honor Society chapter of Wea Ridge Middle School is a duly-chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and have been revised and applied to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected for membership by a Faculty Council appointed by the principal, which bestows the honor of membership upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year. The WRM chapter advisors, Jill Shambaugh and Kelli Burton, are also appointed by the principal and facilitate all selection procedures and chapter activities each year.

Students in 7th and 8th grade are eligible for membership. For scholarship criteria, a student must have a cumulative middle school GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a “Candidate Form” that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.

To evaluate a candidate’s character, the Faculty Council obtains additional professional input from staff members and information from school records. This includes school disciplinary records, staff professional reflections/evaluation of each candidate’s leadership, citizenship, and character. These forms and “Candidate Forms” are carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council to determine whether each candidate meets the criteria for membership. A majority vote of the Faculty Council is necessary for selection. Following a review of the results of the Faculty Council voting by the principal, candidates are notified regarding selection to NJHS.

Once the notification process has been completed, a formal induction ceremony is held at school to recognize all of the newly-selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held during the school year and participation in chapter service projects. Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter advisors listed below.
