Choir class lights up learning

Music students at Wainwright Middle School were glowing this week—literally! Under blacklights and dressed in neon, students turned choir class into a glowing celebration of music and teamwork.

Teacher Kelly Caudill hosted “Glow Days” and transformed the classroom into a vibrant space where students could “glow and grow” their music skills. With light-up glasses, bright outfits and plenty of energy, students rotated through hands-on learning stations that blended music fundamentals with festive Halloween fun.

“I liked seeing everything glow,” says seventh grader Abram Sheets.

At rhythm-based games like ring toss and ping-pong ball toss, students practiced patterns and coordination. Another popular activity had students naming notes on the treble clef to uncover a secret message about bats.

Students also rolled dice to determine musical symbols to decorate a jack-o-lantern while listening to Halloween tunes and reviewing key concepts. Seventh grader Hunter Wilkinson says, “I enjoyed learning about the tempos at one of the stations, about how fast and slow stuff is.”

The glowing activities brought excitement and added a new layer of engagement to everyday learning. Eighth grader Tessa Rice says she enjoyed the ping pong ball activity. “It helped us learn about how many beats are in all of the music notes and rests,” Tessa says. “The glow days are a fun little Halloween activity that applies choir things we learned but it also adds a little fun spin to it.”
