Wea Ridge hosts STEM camp

Many students enjoy time at camp swimming, playing sports and doing other activities. But, at Wea Ridge Middle School, students are digging deeper into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts. TSC Technology teachers Blake Hurd and Ricci Barber are hosting a STEM camp.

During the week-long camp students gain experience with mechanical design software to create a 'Flex Rex.' Students design the movable, three-dimensional dinosaur on their computers, then bring it to life with a 3-D printer. In another room, students spend time learning how to program robots to navigate their way through an obstacle course with lots of twists and turns. In addition, students will learn about animation from a representative of the Purdue University Polytechnic Institute.

"STEM Camp was created to give students an out-of-school educational experience where the pressure of grades are relieved," says Hurd." The goal of the camp is to interest students in STEM careers, primarily engineering."
